Xixi and Makiah’s mural

This term Xixi and Makiah got to unleash their imaginations in a series of colourful creative writing workshops run by the Sydney Story Factory.

They’re among a group of 18 kids who attend after school programs with community organisations Weave and The Settlement in Redfern.

Under the guidance of one of Sydney Story Factory’s expert storytellers, and with the support of a group of volunteer tutors from Amnesty International, they created powerful poetry and explored Aboriginal culture. Their term of workshops culminated in this giant mural of words and images painted on a wall at The Settlement with the help of some professional street artists. Xixi’s and Makiah’s are just two examples of some great creative works that are now a permanent feature for all in Redfern to enjoy.

You can read Xixi’s creative writing here and read Makiah’s here.
