In 2022 Dusseldorp Forum partnered with UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures to “collaboratively develop and promote thriving intergenerational community-led housing projects” in Australia, using demonstration projects as the primary vehicle, underpinned by the core principle of community self-determination.
Demonstration projects are a powerful way to identify systemic barriers, solutions, social and cultural benefits, and opportunities to change policy and practice. They are also a valuable educational tool for raising public awareness and dispelling false perceptions.
This work involved an exploratory phase scoping a program of supportive action research that helps housing communities achieve their goals, building on current research and working collaboratively with communities to identify needs and co-develop solutions.
“We engaged with local communities working towards collaborative housing projects to co-create tailored plans for overcoming the challenges they face, drawing on input from a wide range of experts and stakeholders. We also developed a plan for a broader program of advocacy, research and outreach to encourage longer-term systemic change.”

“This project helped us to build further momentum and support for a housing movement which is increasingly part of the ‘zeitgeist’ and a discrete but significant piece of the puzzle in addressing Australia’s housing crisis. It is a step towards enabling more diverse, affordable and community-led housing choices for the future.”
